The developmental program is a reduced fee option open to boys in Kindergarten (provided they are physically, mature enough) through 3rd grade (3rd graders that have not played lacrosse before and are not so physically mature as to be a danger to other kids in the program) That focuses on basic skill development. The developmental season runs from April through May. The team practices twice a week for 60 75 minutes (depending on attention span). Beginning in May (depending on the progress of the players there may be one scrimmage per week against a neighboring town. . Skills: The emphasis in the developmental program is on learning the proper techniques for the basic skills, and lots of opportunity to practice in fun ways. Skills to be taught in the development program include: Cradling (strong side and weak side) Scooping (strong side and weak side) Throwing and Catching (strong side and weak side) Shooting (strong side only) Option ional (depending on the progress of the team): 1-on-1 defense (moving feet) Stick checking Face-offs Dodging Tactics: At this level the only tactics taught are team work (passing) and keeping track of your defensive assignment. Game Understanding: With the emphasis at this level being on basic skill development we teach only a limited understanding of the game not much more than using your teammates in order to score goals. When we scrimmage, we play a modified version of the game with fewer players, on a smaller field. In an ideal situation we would not spend time on understanding the various positions (attack, midfield, defense, and goalie) or on the off-sides rules. However in order to scrimmage other towns (something that most of the players enjoy immensely) we are often forced to spend time on this. Practice: Practices are twice a week and run from 60 to 75 minutes. Shorter practices in April. In May if the players have progressed enough we will scrimmage other towns once a week which will necessitate 90 minutes. Practices begin with a brief meeting, then warm-ups, proceeds to stations, and finishes up with a group activity, usually of a competitive nature. Practices usually have 2 4 stations depending on the number of players and coaches available. Typical stations include: Cradling Scooping Throwing and Catching Conditioning. As the players progress additional stations my be introduced Stick checking Defense Face-offs The group activity at the end of practice will incorporate the skills learned in a competitive manner such as relay races while cradling, passing, scooping As the players progress we will move to 3-on-3 and 6-on-6 scrimmages. Scrimmages: In May scrimmages against other towns will occur once a week (weather, and suitable competition permitting).
