At the same time he breaks by pointing his glove at his target and placing the ball behind him as far as it will go and above the shoulder. Advanced learners are taught to curl the glove into chest. Make sure kids are turned, point glove hand at the target and fully release the ball to the target. Tendency is for kids at this age to throw the ball squared to the target instead of turned. Also, many kids will throw the ball underhand and not overhand so well need to correct. Grip on ball: 3 fingers on top, thumb cuts ball in half (should be able to see letter C on ball) Stance: Stand sideways, aim with glove, point front toe, break high (ball aiming away), flick throw, follow thru with throwing hand to hit hip, glove tucks into chest. Throwing Drill Station Ask the kids (parents) to bring something to practice that they can use as a good size target to throw the ball at. In the past kids have brought stuffed animals, empty two liters of soda (no kegs!), coaches have made targets out of cardboard boxes, etc.. The coach brings a stand / small table / box (some have brought saw horses) to set the items on. As your players rotate through this station they can practice throwing at their target using the correct throwing techniques above.its incredible how much more focused they become when they throw at something they really want to hit! Catching position - Fielder faces thrower with knees bent, glove up, and free hand open and opposite of the glove. Fielder catches the ball with two hands. Make sure kids are square to the person throwing the ball in the proper catching stance and use two hands to catch the ball then they get into the proper throwing position to throw the ball back. Catching Drill Station Coach stands in front of the kids at a proper distance and doesnt throw the ball to the player until he / she is in the proper stance. With your small group rotating through this station, you can play point games with them. Example: see how many times the players can continuously rotate through catching the ball without dropping (another good focus drill) FIELDING: Positioning in the Field How do you get the kids to field their position vs. the massive pile up / scramble that happens every time someone hits the ball? Let me know when you get the answer!! Possible Solution A former t-ball coach told me that he used baking flour to make a circle at each position on the field and each player would have to stay within their positional area. So, when the ball entered their area they could get it and throw the ball to the appropriate base. He said it prevented all the kids going to the ball all over the field, but there were times coaches would have to instruct players to leave their areas to get the ball because of where it landed. This may be worth a try?? Ground balls Fielder starts with a wide base, his hands out in front, lays his glove down, alligators the ball as it enters his glove, bellies the ball after fielding it, and then gets into the throwing position. Fielder shuffles to balls hit left or right of him (within reason). Shuffle to the ball with your glove as close to the ground as possible. Hat in Mouth Drill - Players put hats in their mouth, the lid is facing up (they can see the front of their hat if they were to look down). This reinforces the proper position. Balls are not throw hard so the fielder can see the ball going into the glove. Tic Tac Toe Drill (Advanced) Enlist parents to help may need up to 4 buckets of balls. HBallsBalls3rd BallsPlayer 4BallsPlayer 31st2ndPlayer 1Player 2 FIELDING: Fly Balls Proper stance is similar to fielding stance at this age. Catch off back shoulder (already in throwing position). Teach catching fly balls in the throwing position; catch the ball off your back shoulder. Make sure of a proper break after balls are caught; need to get rid of the ball quickly Beginner Drill - Using Tennis balls, hand toss the balls into the air. Confidence builder to teach they can catch and that the ball really doesnt hurt when you get it on the head! Advanced drills include racquet ball or tennis racquet and then a sling shot and eventually to batted balls. Outfield Ground Balls There are two types of outfield ground balls; no men on base and runners on base. With no men on base outfielders charge toward the ball, put their glove-hand knee to the ground, lay their glove down, close the gap, field the ball, come up throwing With men on base outfielders have to charge the ball hard. Fielders must position themselves so the ball is close to their body and must bend with the shoulders square to the ground. Practice this by placing balls on the ground and have them charge hard and field the ball. This is a very difficult skill to learn. We also have to understand the VFW field is not Fenway Park Outfield First Step Drill (Advanced). Four hand signals: Up, Down, Left and Right Up back peddle Down charge Left player opens to the left and runs sideways Right player opens to the right and runs sideways Have players start about fifteen feet in front of you. Point up or down to start; then wave them right or left, change to the opposite direction once, and then toss the ball over their head so they can run it down. If caught they set their feet and throw the ball in. If dropped they pick the ball up and run it in. After the first step drill move the players about 50 feet away from you and hit them ground balls. The first set of balls simulates no one on base (knee down); the next set of ground balls simulates runners on base (charge hard). DEVELOP PITCHING: Feet in Mud Pitcher faces target with glove at his chest, rotates his upper body only, breaks, and throws to his target. Focus is on form and keeping feet in one position. Swivel hips, break high, throw, hit throwing hand on side of hip, glove follows thru in chest. Front leg lift - 1..2..3 4 Pitcher is in the set position, raises his front leg three times with front foot pointing downward to get the weight on the back leg, on the fourth lift the pitcher breaks and throws to the target. Focus is to shift weight onto back leg. Start in proper pitching position. Feet appear as they would against the pitcher mound rubber. While counting, lift leg (1), lift leg again (2), lift leg again (3) and on (4) step forward and throw. Break high and follow through. Step behind Drill Pitcher is in the set position with his feet spread apart in the proper relationship (toe in arch). Pitcher steps with his right leg behind his left, raises his front leg, breaks, and throws to his target. The purpose is to keep the head and shoulders still and moving to the target Cross leg Drill similar to Step Behinds but the pitcher starts with his legs crossed (right behind left for righties). Pitcher starts to lean and just before losing balance he lifts his front leg, breaks, and throws to his target. The purpose is to get the momentum going to his target without moving his head and shoulders One Leg Drill Similar to Crossed Legs but this time the pitcher starts with his legs together (toe in arch). Pitcher leans toward target, lifts, breaks, and throws just as hes losing balance All of the pitching drills should be done pitcher-to-pitcher. One pitcher throwing, one pitcher as the target, and then pitcher # 2 repeats the drill back to the first pitcher. HITTING: Goal Sorry to sound elementary on this one guys, our goal as coaches is to teach the kids to concentrate on what theyre swinging at and make solid contact with the object! Youll take pride if by the end of the season all your kids can accomplish this!! Stance One of the most important factors for kids this age is that theyre comfortable at the tee and can make solid contact (hand / eye co-ordination). You will see some of the ugliest stances ever, but its not a bad thing if the kid can hit the ball solidly and make contact. Sometimes we do more harm than good if we try to put them into a stance where theyre not comfortable swinging the back. This is where our patience, every last ounce, comes into play!! An evolution tends to occur where the kids are either in or eventually get into a natural proper stance (open / closed / square). Beach Ball Drill Place a ball in similar size to a small beach ball on the tee first. This will give you as a coach a good first look at each childs swinging skills. Plus it breeds confidence in the kids that may not have tried to hit a smaller t-ball. Number the Ball Drill Place a big bright number on the back of a ball (Tennis Ball or T-ball) and have the child call out the number of the ball before they hit it. Teaches hand eye coordination and to keep the head down on the ball. HINT: be sure to have a few different balls w/ numbers and switch up from batter to batter because using the same number the kids get accustomed and tend to lose their attention. Stress patience at plate. Introduce counting at the plate 1..2..3..: When you see the pitchers butt you load (weight transfers to back leg and hands go up to the ear) As the pitch approaches you take a small jab step toward the pitcher while keeping your hands back. (lifting leg another option instead of step forward) Butt of the bat starts toward the ball, front hand begins a motion similar to throwing a Frisbee while the back hand begins a motion similar to skipping a rock. On contact the hips rotate to finish the skipping the rock motion. At this point the front leg will almost be straight (See Manny). Repeat the count stress patience. Elbow-up is the biggest baseball little league myth there is. Dont teach it. One handed t-drills with a small bat or choke way up on a bat bottom hand, like a Frisbee. Top hand, skip a rock. ADVANCED DRILL / FUN GAME: STRAT-O-BALL Hitters can run to first or third on hit balls. Runners must advance to second before they score. If a hitter runs to third and advances to second he may go from second back to third and then score Hitters, while advancing to first or third on a hit ball, may change their mind while running to first or third and cut across the diamond After reaching first or third you may not cut across the diamond you must advance to second A runner on third can steal second; a runner on second can steal first If hitter # 1 goes to third and hitter # 2 goes to first and this creates a first and third situation, one of the runners must advance to second (you can not go to first or third and turn around and score, you have to advance to second before you score) If you score you are awarded one run but youre awarded an extra run for every time you cross second base (a runner starts at first, advances to third but instead of scoring he steals second, first, and then scores. He crossed second twice so hes awarded two runs IF he scores. Play it as an intra-squad scrimmage but there are no walks. This is a great time to get guys who would like to be pitchers game-time experience. If your team has 13 players put 9 in the field and let four hit. Clear the bases after 3 outs. Have each team keep track of their runs. It will become very competitive This is a great time to work on another important component of the game; bad calls. A coach is going to be the umpire from behind the mound. Make it a point once or twice during the game to make a bad call. A pitcher clearly throws a strike; call it a ball. A close play at first base but the runner is clearly out; call him safe.and then teach poise and composure. Strat-o-ball should be run as controlled scrimmage, especially at the beginning. During a controlled scrimmage the kids should know if the coach yells freeze, everyone is to stop dead in their tracks including the runner. Yell freeze when someone is out of position and then start asking, Where should you be, where should you be, until you get to the offending party or parties. Once youve pointed out the flaw and discussed the proper positioning, yell GO and the game resumes. You have to instruct the outfielders to charge on every ball hit the infield because run downs will happen very often. OTHER HELPFUL HINTS: Arm Care Pitchers must ice the inside of the elbow and the back of their shoulders for at least ten minutes for each area as soon as possible after throwing. Recommend parents get a bag of frozen peas for the player to reuse. One method that works is to rebag the peas since pea bags have small holes. HYPERLINK "http://www.painreliever.com/pi220.html" Pro Ice is another option. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and is helpful for pitchers recovery. There are HYPERLINK "http://www.newenglandsportsmag.com/nutrition/recovery-nutrition-for-the-injured-athlete.html" natural inflammatories (see goal # 4 in this article).
