All money is collected at the beginning of year and paid out at different times. Lovell has not sent a bill yet. A question was raised regarding where we stand with our website. A $70 fee secures the SYHA name for two years. Skills: A meeting was held with head coaches on July 21. Ten coaches attended. Key conclusions from the meeting are: Each team should be at a skills session every other week. Only two teams on the ice at once. There were concerns about having 60+ kids on the ice at one time especially for mites and squirts. Skills sessions will start 2 weeks later than proposed (Sept 28 vs Sept 14) Head coaches recommended that the head coach of the two teams on the ice be responsible for running the skills session. The Outside Service Provider would lead the initial skills sessions, transitioning to the coaches. Sessions with service providers will be used to educate coaches on the skills and on leading a skills practice. A question was asked about what would happen if the head coaches weren’t there. The reply was that this is the head coaches responsibility, and actions would be taken if they fail to fulfill it. This was a problem last year with not all head coaches attending sessions. There was strong support for more goalie skills sessions. A mid-year meeting will be set up with the coaches to evaluate the program. A level appropriate (mite, squirt, peewee, bantam), 15-week skills program will be developed with the service provider. The results of tryouts will be used to assess where weaknesses are to determine what needs to be worked on skills-wise. If coaches buy into this model, then next year we can see how to improve the model. Plan is to have two goalies for skills practices. Still need to resolve how we will handle goalie requirements (using net minders?) since 2 goalies may be too few. A preliminary proposal from Puckmasters was obtained. Prices went up from last year: $225 for 6 Puckmasters coaches on the ice this year (to an 5 stations). With only 4 stations, only 4-5 Puckmasters coaches may be needed on the ice. A question was asked why, if the head coaches will take care of running the skills, Puckmasters will charge that fee. The response is that Puckmasters will 1. develop the 15 week skills program, 2. They will run the initial skills sessions, demonstrating and coaching kids on the skill and 3. Help educate the coaches on teaching skills and running the skills sessions. It was suggested that SYHA ask for a rate of $190 for 5 Puckmasters coaches. Along with Puckmasters, Lovell is also being asked for a price quote. Puckmasters sessions at Puckmasters will be eliminated this year. John Binkoski will continue to do goalie sessions. The charge is $75 a session with $5 per goalie. John wants to increase skills in game situations this year and also to bring his varsity players to each session. John suggested having parents tape their child at a game and then he could critique the goalie. It was difficult getting coaches to goalie sessions last year. It was felt we need to work with John to find a “role” for the coaches at the goalie sessions that will engage them. It would also be helpful for coaches to know John’s plan in advance. It was pointed out that the Lakers have one coach at each level designated as the goalie coach for that level. The Lakers also charge kids a fee to work with a goalie coach. John did a pre-session for coaches last year and it was suggested to have John at a session this year. The time for goalie skills may need to be changed this year. Sun. or Sat. mornings may be a possibility. A question was raised about whether high school or JV players could help out at House League or Learn to Skate. It was agreed that Learn to Skate would be a great opportunity (Herb to follow-up with John and Dan Sullivan) The actual dates for ice time at Buffone are now in, and 3 time slots could be scheduled for skills: Thursday night at 7 & 8 and Saturday at 8. Six groups of two teams each could be made by pairing teams. The teams should be grouped according to skill needs and abilities. Team members would be grouped by ability. The suggested pairings would be Mite 1 and Squirt 2 Mite 2 and Mite 3 Squirt 3 and Squirt 4 Squirt 1 and Peewee 1 Peewee 2 and Peewee 3 Bantam 1 and 2. Ice time is good up to Dec., but Jan. ice slots may be more challenging. One week in Jan., Feb., and March could be a problem for getting skills ice time. The schedule would need to make sure there’s one team practice a week also. Contracts for skills will need to be finalized soon. Coaches: Todd is looking for ice mid- to late Aug. for an on-ice meeting with coaches. The week of August 23 is a possibility. Callan would like some time to talk to coaches regarding the schedule times at that meeting. Coaches should be sending out an e-mail to their team letting the team and parents know who the coaches are. It would be appropriate to send the coaches an e-mail reminding them to do this. A level 4 coaching clinic was held this past weekend in RI. Fundraising: An e-mail was sent out. If anyone has leads, let Kevin Flaherty know. Equipment: Kleen ‘n Hard Sports and Sports Etc. have submitted quotes for goalie equipment. Pure Hockey has also been asked for a quote and will be submitting one. Items may be purchased at different vendors based on the best price quoted. It was suggested additional chalk talk boards be purchased to keep at Lake Ave. Some pucks should be kept aside until mid-year for replacements. Scheduling: There are some 90-min. slots in the schedule. We have 6-10:20 am time on Sundays. Callan wants to schedule all non-practice times first. Tryout times and coaches game for next year will need to be done in Sept. There is more ice time this year especially at the beginning of the season. The question was raised whether it was better to have 2 half-ice or 1 full-ice practice a week. Bantams and peewees should have full ice. Bantams 1 & 2 could be put together and could do 9 pm times. Squirts and mites could do half-ice. Teams could have 1 full & 1 half-ice times per week. Midget teams could be put together. Learn to Skate: There was a question at one time about having people pay less if registering for more than 1 session. A fee of $160 was recommended for this year with $150 for additional session(s). The website could be set up to take care of this kind of registration. Suggestion: Once a month, a section of the bylaws should be reviewed, and at the end of the season, post amendments to bylaws to have membership vote on them at the annual meeting. Since the bylaws are registered with state, they just can’t be changed.
