The Stars are continuing to evolve and we are enhancing our program to serve the ever-growing number of girls playing hockey in Connecticut. As one of the pioneers of Tier 1 girls hockey in the Northeast, we want to add more to the Stars experience. Our goal is to ensure that the Stars remains the premier girls hockey program that its proud history and traditions have fostered in the past. We aim to attract and develop student athletes who can successfully compete at the national level. We are starting a U10 program this year (assuming the demand is there) for the first time, to introduce younger girls to the exciting world of girls hockey and the Stars organization. This will be a development program with roughly one practice per week and a 15-20 game schedule. The main priority of the U10 program will be FUN and skill development. These girls will form the building blocks for the future. Glenn Blicht and Mike Lockwood have agreed to become Co-Directors of the U10, U12 and U14 programs. Glenn and Mike have years of experience coaching hockey and developing effective organizations. Their goal will be to build and strengthen the program at these younger levels and in doing so to strengthen the organization as a whole. Glenn and Mike will be coaching the U14-1 team, assisted by Rick Anderson. Mark Diot will be the head coach of the U14-2 team (assuming the demand is there). Brad DArco, a new addition to the Stars program, will coach the U12 team, along with Jeff Beck and Ed McEvoy. Brad is assistant boys varsity hockey coach at the Berkshire School, and played at the Taft School and Colgate University. The goal at the younger levels is to ensure that the girls have a good experience building their skill level while having fun and competing to the best of their abilities. The U19 team will be coached by John Cooper. John has been a coach of the girls varsity hockey program at the Hotchkiss School for the past 19 years and has served as head coach for the past eight years. He has also coached Stars teams for the past five years, including three teams which have competed at the National Tournament. John has also worked with Moe Tarrant at his Cutting Edge girls hockey camps for the past seven years. John will be assisted by Vic Pucci, who was on the bench with John at the U16 level as well. The head coach of our U16 team next season will be Bill Maniscalco. Bill brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Stars. He has been an assistant coach at Avon Old Farms for the past two seasons. Prior to this role, he spent two seasons with the mens varsity program at Quinnipiac. For the previous ten years, he was head coach of the boys varsity at Choate. Bill has also been actively involved with USA Hockey and New England Development Camps. In the summer months, he runs the Connecticut Elite Camps with a number of college coaches. Cheryl Setchell will be the assistant coach for the U16s. Cheryl is head coach of the girls varsity program at the Kent School. Prior to joining Kent in 2006, she was an assistant coach at the Taft School. Cheryl played hockey at Berkshire and Colgate and was captain of both teams. She has also been involved with USA Hockey evaluation camps. We are very pleased to have Bill and Cheryl joining the Stars organization. We have the full support of the management of the Rinks at Shelton to pursue our objectives. We will also have the support of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers who will provide player mentors for our teams. We also expect to involve a number of college players and coaches in our program, helping us with clinics and practices. Importantly, the Stars have a very strong class graduating from college this year, and they want to give back and participate in the growth of the program that played a critical role in their lives at an early age. These young women are excellent role models for the current group of players. Since the inception of the program, Moe Tarrant has been the driving force behind the Stars, providing inspiration and support for the many student athletes who have so proudly distinguished our program. The Stars have been an integral part of Moes dedication to hockey. As he said recently: In many ways, the Stars have defined my life. I consider the people I have met during this time some of my closest friends. The girls I have been fortunate enough to coach are some of the highest quality people I will ever meet. I believe I have learned as much from them as they have learned from me and I hope to be involved in their lives long after they are done playing hockey. As Moes work and family commitments have evolved, he has concluded that he can best serve the Stars by focusing on his first love: working with the girls on their development and academic dreams. As a result, Moe will not coach a team this year, giving him the opportunity to spread himself more broadly across the organization and to help our players with prep school and college placement. Moe has been helping Stars with their academic and hockey ambitions for years and will focus even more of his efforts on this in the future. Moe has always believed that the Stars should be a great option for both public school and private school students and he has helped many of our girls think through the right fit for them. We want our girls to be well prepared to make an informed choice and the initiatives we are undertaking this year will increase the visibility of Stars girls in the prep school community. We are also considering several programs to help our girls and their families prepare for the college process and some of the related recruiting elements. Rod Gilbride will work with Moe and others to structure these programs. Here is a list of some of the changes/additions that are being implemented in order to ensure a richer and more fulfilling hockey experience for Stars girls: -We will be adding a program to introduce our younger players to the New England prep schools and vice versa. The goal is to make involvement with the prep school community integral to the Stars experience. We have engaged a great hockey coach with experience in this area to design and implement this plan. It will include: a) A number of practice sessions that will be run by the coaches of some of New Englands finest prep school womens hockey coaches. This will be great training and exposure. b) For those girls who are on the U14-1 team, games are currently being scheduled to play at various prep schools throughout the state. It will be great to expose our girls to these wonderful schools and to give them the opportunity to play in some of the most beautiful hockey venues in the country. -The U12s and U14s will have two practices per week at Shelton and they will be at decent hours. Our goal is to have the U14s off the ice by no later than 9:30 p.m. -The focus of practices in the early part of the season will be heavily weighted towards skill development. Team skills will become more of a focus later in the season. -We will be incorporating some professional power skating instruction into some of our practice sessions. -Jeff Beck, who played goalie at Queens University, will oversee our goalie development program. We will continue to have a program goalie coach and are planning to run some goalie clinics during the season. - The goal for our Tier I teams is to compete at the National level. This means playing top competitors during the season and participating in competitive tournaments. As in prior years, our teams will participate in the Rhode Island Panthers Tournament during Thanksgiving weekend and the Polar Bears Holiday Tournament in late December. We are considering a third tournament for a number of our teams and will be entering an older team in two summer tournaments this year to increase early season college visibility: the Chowder Cup in July and the NAHA tournament over Labor Day. We will continue to have clinics in the fall run by college coaches. -Tom Ketchum, Tracy Beck and Hank Huidekoper will be our tournament directors. -In order to build a greater sense of community in the Stars and to promote our program, we have hired Joe Katz, a veteran in building hockey organizations, to become the Webmaster and Director of Communications for our program. Joe will help build the content of our website and improve our overall marketing, communication and administration. Our goal is to build a site where all the girls can share their successes and news to our community. The website will be the primary communication medium going forward. Joe is a passionate hockey person and more than capable administrator and we are excited to have him involved with the Stars. - Parents will have an opportunity to formally evaluate our coaches during the season. We want constructive feedback from the membership on how our coaches are doing and how they can improve the girls experience. - John Keeshan will act as Coaching Coordinator for the program to field any coaching concerns which may arise during the season. John will be the point person for parent questions and feedback and as a sounding board when parents feel they cannot work out a situation with a coach. Moe asks that these avenues be utilized in all coaching situations rather than contacting him directly as in the past. -Throughout the season, parents will be welcome to voice their suggestions as to how to improve the program through the website feedback option or directly to the Stars President, Doug Greenwood. -We will involve objective evaluators in tryouts this month to ensure a fair process. We are also tightening our policy with respect to the timing of player commitments. To ensure a spot on a team, players must make a $500 deposit and sign our commitment letter shortly after tryouts. Details of these procedures will be displayed at the first tryout. -Tracy Beck will serve as Coordinator of the Team Managers, making sure we take a consistent approach across the organization. -We will be organizing a mini-golf tournament in partnership with the Rinks at Shelton as an early season fundraiser. This will ensure that we have adequate resources to fund additional program enhancements. We will need volunteers for this event. -We will be creating a Stars Yearbook this coming season. The yearbook will be both a great keepsake as well as an effective fundraiser. We have some volunteers already for this effort and will be looking for more. -We are formally starting up a Stars merchandise effort and we will be bringing on some exciting, new gear and apparel to the Stars community. -We will have a year-end banquet to celebrate the season. We will be looking for volunteers to organize this event. These are just some of the exciting changes in the works to make the Stars organization stronger next year and beyond. However, the success of our efforts will be dependent upon the volunteer efforts from all the parents involved in the program. We already have people volunteering to help with a number of tasks, but the more people that get involved, the better our program. Thank you in advance for your support of these important and exciting changes.
