Through the early efforts of Dave Burke, and many, many committed parents and girls, the Westwood Youth Hockey organization has germinated from the one U12 team three seasons ago to being on the precipice of having potentially five (5) teams next season! They would be a U10 team for all girls 10 or under, a U12 team or two depending upon enrollment, a U14 team for the first time as well as a "short season" U19 team which would be primarily a tune up for the Westwood High School girls team and any other area residents that play high school girls hockey that want to get a jump on their seasons; almost identical to our Midget (boys) program. As the Girls program is certainly blossoming it is important that we afford it and establish the same guidelines and parameters that the existing predominately boys programs benefit from as well as clear up certain blurred lines that were allowed in the past year just to get the girls program established. Boys and Girls need to sign up for one team and one team only within their age group. It is important to note that the program will not maintain a team if there is not enough interest. The program cannot routinely maintain teams that cannot exist without cross-rostering. If a team is found to be light, perhaps a couple of comparable age and ability players will be cross-rostered to accommodate such team when it is in fact light. Those players however are only to plan on playing when called. Other than a colorful bandana sticking out of the back of a helmet or a preponderance of pink gloves on the ice at any one point in time, the Girls program will continue to receive the exact same support, attention and shepherding from the Program as any other boys team. The coaches will be selected under the same parameters as boys coaches are selected which takes into account experience, availability, commitment etc. The Girls teams will be enrolled in the leagues based on the capability of the players on their rosters and as assessed by the coaches and the Program that will provide them with the best competitive situation so that they can be challenged, grow and develop as players as well as individuals and teammates so as to hopefully maximize the benefits of the experience. It is important to drive home the sense of "team" as it pertains to attending practice and games and learning and experiencing together. Being part of a team is a great experience for a young player. Being counted upon to show up regularly and contribute to the composition and better production of the team is important. Being rewarded for attending practice sessions and games and being depended upon by teammates is an important aspect of what the program hopes to instill in our young players. If the program were to allow parents to attempt to register their player on two teams (traditional boy and a girl team) significant conflicts between games and practice, and games at the same time are inevitable. The team concept is compromised. A parent hoping to enroll their player on two or more teams within or outside the program and plan on dropping in just for games does not send the right messages to those that are on the team, playing on lines or in pairings with other teammates in the many long months of practices. Practice sessions, skills and power skating are the areas that should be focused on by the parents at these younger levels for the most development with the games simply a weekly reward. Money thought to be spent on two teams with the program could be better spent on one team and one outside power skating or skills regimen. Games are fun! But think about it; with three lines each player is playing one third of the forty or forty-five minute game or thirteen to fifteen minutes versus a fifty or sixty minute practice, skills or power skating session. How many touches of the puck is that player getting in those thirteen to fifteen minutes? As with the full program, your daughter will be assigned to and play on a team at the age appropriate level. We cannot underscore enough that there is nor should there be given any notion that the Girls program is a continuing "experiment", accommodation or a second tier to the main program. It is and will continue to be a thriving component and group of teams with the same demands and expectations placed upon them as any other teams within the WYH organization. In other words, the thinking of wanting ones girl to play with the boys as it will be a better team or they will learn more is starting to become a thing of the past. Please select one age appropriate team for your player. If you have no preference which team they are placed on but prefer it just be the one that is thought to be the best situation for such player, please indicate such and the organization will be in contact with you with its recommendation. Based on the registration levels and the player's capabilities, certain players and families may be asked by WYH to have their child placed on a different team than what they originally requested. There will certainly be communication and discussion about such but we'll worry about that when and if it happens.
