Most coaches will have the tendency to become negative, to say, in effect, itТs okay to make a mistake but not the same one over and over. I have struggled with this issue for a long time. I have had baseball players who continually leave third base too soon when a sacrifice fly is hit and are called out. IТve had basketball players who just canТt seem to go back up with a rebound without dribbling and then having the ball taken away. When a coach sees this happen again and again, it becomes very difficult to continue to believe and act as if you believe that mistakes are okay. I think it helps to try to understand exactly what it is that is the mistake and why it is happening. Becoming negative and criticizing the player doesnТt help in any case. And, in fact, a recurring mistake can be used as a symptom to try to find out what the problem is and to rectify it. For example, the player who leaves third base early may be anxious about the play at the plate. He may not want to collide with the catcher or get hit by the throw to the plate. In his anxiety, he may forget to look at the outfielder and see the ball into his mitt. At this point it is worth asking if he has been taught to see the ball into the mitt Ц if he hasnТt, start there rather than giving up on the idea that mistakes are good. If it is the anxiety that is the problem, then you need to help him address that. For example, you can show him ways to protect himself during the slide. The basketball player who always dribbles even when she doesnТt need to, giving the defense time to catch up, is probably simply exercising a habit. Kids like to dribble. In time they get so they donТt feel comfortable shooting without dribbling at least once first. Breaking a habit takes time and repetition getting rebounds and going up without dribbling in practice again and again before the new habit of going right back up replaces the old habit. ItТs hard to come down too much on kids making this mistake when you see major college ballplayers doing the same thing almost every time you watch a game. Mistakes & Credibility ItТs easy to tell a kid you like them, that you accept them no matter how they perform. But the child has learned differently. ItТs easy for a child to disregard pious statements, but it is a different matter when a coach responds positively after a costly mistake. There is no more dramatic way to communicate that you care about a person, and that you mean it when you say that mistakes are okay, than after that person has made a costly mistake. In reality, coaches who are interested in developing their players as people should welcome costly mistakes for this reason. Remember: УYou get good judgment by exercising bad judgment.Ф I would go so far as to say that in many cases that is the only way that people develop good judgment.
