Philosophy - Its for the Kids! FUN! Respect Discipline Teamwork Sportsmanship Self Esteem Skills Development Whole Player Development Success: Defined by creating a love for the sport in our kids and preparing them to become competitive soccer players. Saturday Game Day Guidelines Total Time allotment 60 minutes Practice: 20 Minutes for warm-ups and practice games. Game: Play 2 15 minute halves with a 5 minute half time break. Provide plenty of water breaks. Pay attention to the kids needs particularly on hot days. Coaching Tips for young players Lots of touches on the ball Avoid line based drills If you do want to put some line drills in play, make the lines only 2 or three players deep. Keep players moving Idle time causes the kids to lose interest. Coach to the players age level. Younger kids everything is a game. Dont be afraid to be a kid yourself. Focus on ball control and basic skills. Barlow plays possession style soccer. Good foot skills and field knowledge is essential for this style of play. Start simple and add complexity as they get it. If you start too complex, you will lose their interest. Always start with a warm up. Everyone has a ball Do a light warm up before stretching. Make it fun while teaching them the basics of stretching. Try to have a plan of what you want to do before you get on the field. Minimize down time Have back up ideas in case one exercise does not go well. At younger levels, get parents involved. Create a Team Identity Name your Team! Have a Team Banner making day. Talk to the team at the end of each session to review what went well and what the team will continue to work on. SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Tick Tock" * * * * (aka "The Foundation") (Fast feet & footwork, All ages) Teaches:Fast feet, touch & ball control using inside-of-feet Set-up:Every player has a ball & starts with the ball between his feet, with knees bent The Game:On "Go" each player taps the ball between his feet. Each tap is "one" 1st to reach 20 wins (1st to 40 if U-12). Tip:Keep knees bent & tap ball with the front of the foot (this gives better control than the back of the foot). Good for fast feet, touch and coordination. A good warm-up exercise. Set-up:Each player has ball and is in a circle, facing each other, with the ball in front of his feet. The Game:On "Go" the players quickly use the bottom of one foot to tap the top of the ball, then the other foot, etc. (right, left, right, etc.) First to 20 wins Teaching Points:After a while, encourage players to look up while doing this Similar Games:"Steparounds" and "Tick Tock" HYPERLINK "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/practice_games/index.shtml" From SoccerHelp Premium, www.soccerhelp.com Copyright 1999-2005, David and Kay Huddleston SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Circle & Outside-Of-Foot Push" * * (Footwork, U-8 & Up)Teaches:Footwork & use of outside-of-foot to control the ball Set-up:Each player stands behind a ball with feet apart like below: INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/images/practice_games2.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET The Game:Move the right foot forward & then around the front of the ball so the outside of the right foot is touching the ball where the x is. Then push the ball softly to the right (so it goes only 2 or 3 feet), turn to the right so the ball is again at your feet & do it again. Do 10 "circle & pushes" using the right foot & then 10 using the left foot. The first player to do 10 wins. From SoccerHelp Premium, www.soccerhelp.com Copyright 1999-2005, David and Kay Huddleston SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Monster Invasion" (Dribbling & concept of a field, U-6) Summary:Tell the players that a Monster is coming to try to steal their pet ball and that they must keep it away from the Monster by dribbling it around the field (tell them they must stay inside the field). The Coach or a parent is the monster. Ideas: drag your leg like Frankenstein, make monster noises, make a face, and say things like "Don't let me get your ball!!" But don't actually scare them. The idea is just to have them try to get away. Don't catch the players, just have fun. Set-up:A ball for every player. Use disk cones or markers to make a square field about 10 steps by 10 steps (or smaller if you have only a few players). Teaches:"Control Dribbling" The concept of a "field" and staying inside the lines ("in bounds") and that it's bad to go "out of bounds" Controlling the ball while under pressure Using peripheral vision Looking up while dribbling Dribbling in "traffic" with a lot of other players nearby Comments:Whether children continue to play soccer will have a lot to do with whether it is fun at early ages. SoccerHelp Practice Games are designed to be fun, to teach important skills and concepts, and to keep players active. We don't use "knock-out" or elimination games which leave kids standing on the sideline and we don't use games such as "Crab Soccer" which are fun but have many kids crawling on the ground instead of learning to play soccer. There are thousands of drills on the Internet, but most are not well thought out, efficient, effective or fun. Most drills and games do not provide enough touches on the ball or the activity level is too low (i.e., there is too much standing around) to meet SoccerHelp standards. SoccerHelp Practice Games are selected from hundreds we have tried and less than 5% of the games we evaluate are selected for SoccerHelp Premium. We believe in positive motivation and don't believe in punishing a child who has tried their best but lost a Practice Game. Thus, we do not recommend punishing the losers or making the losers leave the game. SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Sharks and Minnows" (Dribbling, shielding, tackling, U-6 & up) Summary:Two players start out as "Sharks" and the rest as "Minnows". The Minnows each have a ball but the Sharks do not have a ball. The Sharks try to kick the Minnow's balls out of the "Pond" (a square outlined by cones). Each time a ball is kicked out, that Minnow becomes a Shark. The winners are the last 2 Minnows. Play 3 games, using different players as the beginning Sharks. Set-up:Use disk cones to make a square 7 to 20 steps across, depending on age and number of players. Easy set-up & everyone has a ball. This is a great warm-up. It is 10 times better than dribbling through cones & is a good way to evaluate dribbling skill. This game helps children's brains to learn to process a lot of activity, to use peripheral vision, and to make correct, instinctive decisions and maintain composure when under pressure and in heavy traffic.Teaches:Control dribbling, to look up while dribbling & how to do a "Pullback" (aka "Drag Back"), "Stop/Turn", "Cutback" & "Hook Turn". Players learn to use peripheral vision, to shield the ball when in traffic, and that they can speed up if they get in the clear. It is a "self-teaching" game and playing the game really teaches these skills and self-confidence & composure in heavy traffic & under pressure. It also teaches composure in chaotic situations and how to recognize openings in traffic and when it's safe to speed up. You will notice an improvement in "field vision" and "field awareness" (the ability to see opportunities in a crowd and across a field, and to make quick, instinctive, correct decisions). Set-up:Use 4 disk cones to make a square about 10 or 12 steps wide (smaller or larger depending on age & number of players) Every player has a ball Spread players around the square, all facing inward. The Game:All players start on "Go" & each player dribbles across the square & back. (Tell them to dribble to the imaginary line on the opposite side of the square, make a turn & dribble back to where they started. Point out at the first of the game that the cones create an imaginary "Starting Line" and "Turning Line" for each player). " Must do a "Pullback", a "Stop/Turn", a "Cutback" or a "Hook Turn" to turn. (Do a Pullback, aka a "Drag Back", by putting the bottom of the foot on top of ball to stop it & pull it back in the direction you came from. Do a Hook Turn by pulling the toes up & turning the foot so the outside of the foot can "hook" the ball, stop it & pull it back. A Cutback uses the inside of the foot to hook the ball). Tell players to look up while they dribble so they don't run into each other (don't worry, there won't be many collisions). Each player keeps count of his or her trips across the square. The first to 12 is the winner (each time he turns is "one"). Tell players to yell "Done" when finished and ask each player his score after each game. Play 3 games; 1st to 12, then to 10, then to 8. Play at the start of practice as a warm-up and at the end of practice until dribbling skills improve or your team gets tired of this game. For beginners, let them decide how to turn using the method they are most comfortable with. For advanced or select players, require a Pullback one game, then a Hook, then a Cutback. Let a "Stop/Turn" count for a Pullback. After your team has played this game in a few practices, make the square larger so it is less crowded. This will let players speed up when they get in open space. Tell them that they can go faster if they kick the ball in front of them, but they MUST still keep control of the ball. If they kick it too far, they won't be able to make their turn. In most games, a player will lose the game if he or she loses control of the ball even once. The game is self-teaching, but it is helpful for the coach to be encouraging and to point out how players can improve their performance. Teaching Points:"Control Dribbling" - When in traffic, keep the ball close to your feet so you can protect it ("shield" it) and learn how to look up while dribbling by keeping the ball close to your feet so you know where it is. "Speed Dribbling" - When you get "open" (out of traffic), you can kick the ball using the inside of foot or the "laces" & run to it so you can go faster, but you must still keep it under control so you can turn. How to do a "Pullback", "Stop/Turn", "Hook Turn", and a "Cutback". The "Dribble Across A Square Game" is a copyrighted SoccerHelp exclusive. It was created by us and is available only on SoccerHelp and SoccerHelp Premium. SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Push & Blast Off" * * (Footwork, U-8 & up) Teaches:Use of outside-of-foot & a quick first step to get past an opponent.Set-up:Each player stands behind the ball with feet apart like below: INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/images/pg-push_and_blast_off.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET The Game:Put the laces of the right foot on the inside of the back of the ball about where the x is. (Do this by drawing the right leg back like you are going to kick the ball, but then bend the leg at the knee so the right foot goes to the inside of the ball. The foot will be at about a 45 degree angle to the ground & the right side of the laces will be touching the ball). Push the ball to the forward-right (about 45 degrees in the direction of the arrow) so it goes 3 - 10 feet & as you do drop the right shoulder a little & push off with the left leg so you "blast off" toward the ball. You must go fast so you can beat the defender to the ball. Do for 1 minute & then with the left foot Comment:This teaches fundamentals that will be used many times in a game. This is a good warm-up. If you are a beginning coach, review "How To Teach Throw-Ins" at "Skills". This isn't great fun, but it is quick & effective. First:If your players need to practice throw-ins, I suggest first lining them up shoulder-to-shoulder (facing you) without a ball. On "Go" have them all pretend to make a throw-in while you watch. Comment & have them do it again. Be sure they drag the toe of their rear foot so hard they can hear it, that their hands go behind their head, & that they remain upright & follow through with both arms. Do this 5 consecutive times. Then:Have them pair up, one ball per pair (a parent or assistant coach plays if an extra is needed) Members of each pair face each other, 7-15 steps apart (depending on age). (There will be 2 lines facing each other shoulder-to-shoulder, about two steps apart). Start with the balls all on one side, so the players will first be throwing the same way On "Go", the players with the ball all make a throw-in to their teammate while the Coach or parents watch for distance, side spin and to be sure they are dragging the rear foot (side spin is bad because it means they are using one arm too much & the referee can give the ball to the other team if he believes one arm is used too much) Encourage high throw-ins that would go over an opponent's head; not a throw-in toward the ground Have each player take about 5 throws The Coach selects the "winners" who he believes have done the best & is complimentary of everyone who is trying Teaching Points:Drag the toes of the rear foot so hard that they can hear it When the ball goes behind the head, elbows should be pointing out to the side (this gives power) Remain upright, follow through, snap wrists Through over opponents; not toward the ground (this is less likely to cause the rear foot to come off the ground) Avoid too much side spin SOCCER PRACTICE GAMES "Attack & Defend Ball Tag" * * * * (Dribbling, turning, tackling, Better for older ages) Summary:A fun, simple, tag game that teaches dribbling, turning, shielding, and tackling. Set-up:Use 4 cones to make a square "Homebase" 3-4 steps wide (3 steps for younger and 4 for older) Out from the Homebase, put cones (call them "Scoring Cones") equal to the number of Defenders plus one (e.g., 4 Scoring Cones if 3 Defenders), like shown below. Put the Scoring Cones 5-10 steps from the Homebase (5 if younger and 7 or 10 if older) Pick 1/4 of the players to be "Defenders". They are "it" and will try to use their feet to tag the "Attackers" balls. Give each the remaining players a ball. They are "Attackers". INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/images/pg-attack_defend_ball.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET The Game:Attackers start inside the Homebase Defenders must stay outside the Homebase and may not enter it or cross it On "Go", Attackers try to dribble around one the Scoring Cones and back to the Homebase without having their ball tagged by a Defender. Every time they dribble around a Scoring Cone and make it back home without their ball being tagged they get one point. Defenders try to tag a ball by touching it with a foot. If they touch it, they get a point. If an Attacker's ball is tagged, he must return to the Homebase and start over. Play for two minutes and ask everyone's score and switch Defenders so everyone gets a turn. See which Attacker and Defender has the highest score in a round and the highest cumulative score. Also, notice which players have the lowest scores, because that will tell you who to try to help or who isn't a good Defender. Rules:Defenders cannot enter or cross the Homebase To score, Attackers must go around a Scoring Cone and get their ball back inside the Homebase without it being tagged. They can only go around one Scoring Cone at a time. Defenders only have to touch a ball with their feet (i.e., tag the ball) to score a point. When tagged, Attackers must return to the Homebase and start over, but they don't lose points they have scored. Only one Defender at a time may challenge an Attacker No one may use hands to push or hold. No slide tackles, tripping or hard tackles. Defenders may not kick, tackle from behind or knock down the Attacker. Attackers may shield the ball from Defenders by keeping their body between the Defender and the ball. They cannot push or lean into the Defender. Teaching Points:"Speed dribbling" and "Control dribbling" "Shielding" the ball "Shoulder charge" "Toe poke" (show Defenders how) Turning using inside or outside of foot Variations:Allow tagging with hands instead of feet. Increase or decrease the number of defenders. Place 2 rows of cones 6 to 15 steps apart (depending on age) like below. One of the groups is in the center and are defenders. The other group is "attackers" and line up on one of the cone rows facing inward toward the defenders. Each of the attackers has a ball and on "Go" they try to dribble across to the other row of cones while defenders try to "tag" the balls with their feet (i.e., tell defenders U-8 & older that they should just try to touch the ball with their foot, and to not kick it because kicking it will disrupt the game. However, let U-6 kick the balls away). For U-8 and older the players keep score. If an attacker's ball is touched, he should continue trying to get across to the opposite cones. Attackers can be "tagged" by more than one defender on a trip across. Each attacker gets one point for each successful crossing. Each defender gets one point for each time they tag a ball. Defenders can only tag an attacker once during a game (this forces them to try to tag every attacker), tell them to yell "Done" when they have tagged every attacker. Stop when a defender yells "Done" or after 2 minutes and ask each player her score. Then, switch the groups so the defenders become attackers and attackers become the defenders. Play 3 or 4 games. It is okay if one of the groups has an extra player. This is a good, simple game where everyone is active. It teaches attackers to dribble and "shield" the ball from defenders. And it teaches defenders to "tackle" (which means to take the ball away from the attacker) and "jockey" (which means to slow down the attacker). See Rules, below. Set-up:Place 2 rows of cones 6-15 steps apart (6 steps apart for U-6 and 15 steps apart for U-14. Usually, a smaller area is better than one that is too large, because the players get more touches in a smaller area. In this case, you want to encourage one vs. one match ups between the attackers and defenders. But use your own judgment about the size that works best). The set-up is shown below. INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/images/pg-across_back_ball_tag.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET Divide the players into 2 groups. These are not teams. Players will keep their own scores, similar to "Dribble Across A Square". You don't need to try to balance the groups and it is okay if one of the groups has an extra player. One group starts off as "defenders" and are in the center. They do not have a ball. The other group is "attackers". Have the group of attackers stand on one of the rows of cones, facing inward toward the defenders. Each attacker has a ball. The Game:On "Go", attackers try to dribble across to the other row of cones without having their ball "tagged". Each time they make it across they get one point. An attacker might be "tagged" several imes on the way across. The more times he is tagged, the more he will be slowed up. He gets a point each time he crosses to the opposite row of cones. Keep play continuous for two minutes or until a defender yells "Done." Then stop play, call for the scores of attackers and defenders, and the attackers become the defenders. See Rules below. Defenders try to touch the balls with their foot and get a point for each time they do. Tell U-8 and older to NOT kick away the balls or they will lose a point (it disrupts the game if they kick away the balls). (Let U-6 kick the ball away because it may confuse them to try to explain why they should kick the ball away in a real game but not in this game). Tell defenders that they can only tag a player's ball once during each game (with U-6 this may not work) and to yell "Done" when they have tagged all the balls. Stop the game after 2 minutes or when a defender yells "Done" (whichever happens first) and ask each player (defenders and attackers) their score. (U-6 probably won't be able to keep track of their scores, so just have fun). After each game, switch the groups so a different group are the defenders. Play 3 or 4 games. Variation For U-6 or U-8: Use hands to tag the player instead of tagging the ball with feet.Rules:U-8 & older may only tag a player once during each game (this is to encourage them to tag every player and not just tag the easy ones). Defenders may only tag the ball with their foot (either foot). If U-8 or older kicks the ball away (more than 3 steps away) they do not get the point and have an extra point deducted. (If they kick the ball away it will disrupt the game). Attackers are safe from being tagged if they have a foot on or behind either row of cones. Attackers must keep their ball within 3 steps of them and cannot just kick it across to the other row, or they lose a point. Attackers get a point each time they make it across from one side to the other. Tell them to keep their own score, or parents can help. The objectives are to introduce the basic concepts, so keep it simple and don't try to teach too much at once. For U-6, teach the idea that there are 2 goals and one team tries to kick the ball into one and the other team tries to kick it into the other, that there are "positions", that players should stay within the field, etc. Teams can score by dribbling the ball thru the goals or by kicking it thru. Keep it fun. Rules:Players can score by dribbling thru the opponent's goal or by kicking the ball thru the goal. Teach them the basic rules. Throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, kick-offs. Dont use goalies. If lots of goals are scored without goalies, introduce a one pass rule before scoring.Suggestions:Stick to teaching the very basics such as the concepts of a "field", "teams", "goals", and not using hands. Don't try to teach "positions", instead try to teach the concepts of "goalies", "attackers" and "defenders". Have the defenders stay near the goal their goalie is in, and tell them that that the goalie is also a defender (telling them to stay near their goalie is often a clearer way to explain where they should stay than telling them to defend "their goal"). Let the attackers come up on the attack, but tell them to not try to steal the ball from their teammate. Don't worry about teaching U-6 to pass during this game. Try to eliminate be-hive ball. Stop the game and show them what to do. Have fun. Basic Concepts and Rules Teach the following concepts and rules. Not using hands (except the Goalie) and not tripping, holding, pushing or hitting other players (it is good to "fight" for the ball, but not to use hands to hit or push). The concept of a "field" that has lines (or is outlined by cones) that you should stay inside. The concept of "our goal" (the one our Goalie is in) and "their goal" (the one the other team's Goalie is in) and that when we have the ball we should go toward "their goal" (to "attack" it) and when the other team has the ball we should "defend" our goal by kicking the ball away from it. Demonstrate what this means in a slow and patient way and repeat it in several practices. Playing the " HYPERLINK "http://www.soccerhelp.com/premium/practice_games/Beginners_Soccer.shtml" Beginners Soccer Game" in SoccerHelp Premium is one of the best ways to teach this. Also, scrimmaging other teams can be helpful. The concepts of "attacking" and "defending" and how we try to kick the ball into the other team's goal and how we try to kick it away from our goal.
