How will that experience differ from that of my older child who went through the program a few years ago? In most respects, the soccer experience will be similar. The games are still played on small fields, with 4 players on a side. The emphasis is on fun, learning a bit about soccer, and making new friends. Parents coach the games, which entails helping the kids learn the rules of the game and making sure everyone has fun and is safe. Practices are held once a week to help build skills. The key difference is the format and leadership of those practices. They will be conducted in a clinic format rather than as individual teams. Larger groups of kids, from several teams, will all have practice together. Professional trainers, from MLS Soccer Camps, will conduct those practices. Many of our children have had the opportunity to work with the MLS trainers in practices over the past few years, so this may already be familiar. Practices will include games that build soccer related skills, such as ball control, passing, and shooting, as well as scrimmages to teach kids how to play together. Parent coaches will not be required to be at practices, but are encouraged to attend if they can, and participate if they wish. It can be a lot of fun to join in! My child will be in first grade in the fall what will his experience be like? First graders will use the same format as the kindergarten players described above. Games are 4 v 4 on small fields; parent coaches coach the Saturday morning games; practices will be once a week in a clinic format, conducted by MLS coaches. They will practice at a different time from the kindergarten kids, so the coaches can adapt the games and scrimmages to the needs and skills of this next age group. What changes when my child goes to 2nd grade? Starting with second grade (U8), children will practice with their teams. The team size and field size gets larger, to accommodate the growing abilities of the kids. The teams play 7 v 7, and there are goals and goalies! Parent coaches are now going to attend all practices; MLS coaches will take the leadership role when they are present, which generally will be most practices at U8. What about 3rd grade and up the rec plus program? The practice/game format described above for 2nd grade will remain in place for the remainder of a childs intramural program (through 8th grade). Practices will be organized by team; parent coaches will be present for all practices. MLS trainers will be in attendance for more than half of the practice time; parent coaches will continue to coach Saturday games. At U9 and U10, play is 8 v 8 on still larger fields; at U11 and up, the play is 11 v 11 on full sized fields. Teams from Wilton play in a rec plus league, which involves neighboring towns as well. Games are still played on Saturdays, but they could be here in Wilton or one of the surrounding towns. Why is the WSA bringing in professional trainers for the intramural program? The WSA has used professional trainers in the intramural program for the past 3 years. Each year, we have increased our commitment of trainer hours based on the positive feedback we have received from the program. We have been encouraged as well by the increased number of children who make the jump from intramural to travel programs each year after having had the opportunity to work with these trainers. We also wanted to make sure that all players in the WSA, whether they play on intramural or travel teams, have the chance to work with professional coaches and get the most out of the program. The changes we are making this year increase the effective number of hours we receive from our commitment to using the trainers. While the WSA is not intending to increase its budgeted expenditures this season, we will be able to ensure that every child in the program in a given age group gets the same benefit from those trainers by adjusting the schedules and approach we use. We will also be able to use our fields more efficiently, which over time should leave them in better condition. Ive been a parent coach for years and like working with the kids will I still be able to? We still need you as does your child! Parent coaches will still work with the teams on Saturday games at all age levels. From U8 up, they will also have an integral role in weekday practices. The most significant difference will be for Kindergarten and First Grade, where parent coaches wont be required to attend weekday practices for some working parents who have wanted to coach but couldnt due to travel or commuting issues, this should allow them to participate as coaches in a way they couldnt before. If this change in format means you can now volunteer to coach, contact Chuck Brody, VP of K-2 Intramural, at cpbrody@netscape.net. Ive heard that Kindergarten and First Grade Practices will be held only on one day a week is this correct? This is partially correct. The clinic format means that the practices will be grouped, and will be scheduled each week. All kindergarten practices will be held on Mondays. U7 clinics will be held on a couple of days per week. Each child will be assigned a practice time in advance of the season. This is not a unique approach other youth sports in Wilton use this format but it is a change for the WSA. In planning the schedule, we have looked at the schedules for other activities that our players may pursue, and to the extent possible, we have tried to avoid known conflicts with any other activities that are held only once a week. We have posted the schedule on the website HYPERLINK "http://www.wiltonsoccer.info" www.wiltonsoccer.info and hope that by having it available in July, parents can make informed choices about their childrens activities. In the event of an immovable conflict that we did not anticipate, please contact the VP of Intramural and we will attempt to find a solution that works. The logic for clinic style practices comes from the developmental needs of children this age. The coaching organizations we interviewed recommended this as the most appropriate way to teach children of this age. Their collective experience indicates that 5, 6 and 7 year olds tend to think about the game from an individual perspective. As a result, these coaching organizations formal curricula emphasize individual skill development, because that is what the majority of children are best able to learn at this age. The games do teach skills such as offensive and defensive play, passing, etc just in a way that is age appropriate. The clinic style works well, because it is fun for the kids they see more of their friends and classmates, they mix things up with more new friends, and they play with a wider array of other children. As children mature, and expand their perspective, they will practice as a team and more emphasis will be on team related skills. How did the WSA arrive at this decision? The WSA board voted to explore different coaching arrangements last fall. The Coaching Committee of the board was charged with the task of investigating alternatives, interviewing outside organizations and developing recommendations. The Coaching Committee includes 7 voting and 3 non voting members all have or have had children in the program and all have coached or managed teams. This process lasted from December 2005 through May 2006. In that time, members of that committee evaluated the approaches used by neighboring towns, developed a request for proposal, interviewed three coaching organizations (Beachside, MLS and Noga), conducted reference checks, gathered feedback from current parent coaches and discussed alternative formulations to implement the ideas and programs. The recommendations were approved by the full Board in May. As part of the approval, the Board agreed to follow this approach for the next two soccer years and evaluate it on an ongoing basis during that period. The Board fundamentally believes that the approach adopted will provide access for more children to professional trainers and will better utilize and maintain the field resources available to the soccer program. {00237714; 1; 9000-92} 3Hdfn LMO[] bm ;ںڶh?:h'0hUOhHhHH*hHh&DhF5H*h&DhF5hz hPhFh'h'hH05H* hU5h'hH05 h'05hH0hF5CJ aJ hH0hzo5CJ aJ hH0hH05CJ aJ 3Idef NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!gdFgdH0^gdH0h^hgdH0 & FgdH0$a$gdH0((O mn ##!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! !! !!gd@^gdC & FgdCgdCh^hgdF^gdFgdF^gd?: & FgdF m*2e}5[o|3N o/f<5 v y !h!i!!!!!##ʷ®ߪ甆h@hUh&Dh~LSh^0Jjh^Ujh^Uh^hs h'05h^hC5hCh'0h-KhUOhPhFhFhF5<#$$(((((((!!!!!!^!^gd@gd@ & Fgd@ #$$%&&d'((((((h%hshshsCJhPhrh@hrh@5 1h/ =!"#$%DyK www.wiltonsoccer.infoyK <http://www.wiltonsoccer.info/@@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List6U@6 ^ Hyperlink >*B*ph4@4 sHeader !4 @4 sFooter ! 8 z z z zN nIdefN O m n 00000 00000000 0000 000000 00000 000000 0000 0000x0x0x 0x0x0x0 0p0!0 #(O#(( X8@0( B S ?#lw#,!#!#!#!#!#?B ~ $ V`} ::: ` n { 15 e n^`o(. ^`hH. pLp^p`LhH. @ @ ^@ `hH. ^`hH.
