FIELD MAINTENANCE VOLUNTEERS One parent from each team per game will be asked to manage the field maintenance responsibility. Your team parent will supply a schedule. Ask as many people to help as possible (even the kids!) WHAT TO / HOW TO DO: IN FIELD: Drag" the field by using the steel drag mat and dragging it between 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Do not drag the baselines with the drag mat, use a metal rake and or the nail drag (if available). Store the drag mat on the top rack in the box. HOME PLATE: Use the rake, nail drag and the steel drag mat and pull the dirt towards the plate. Fill in the holes around the plate. (Ideally water would be used and a tamp to firm up the holes as opposed to filling them with just dust). Make the area as level as possible. THE PITCHERS MOUND: Rake the dirt on the mound from the grass towards the pitching rubber.Fill in the hole in front of the pitching rubber (again ideally water and a tamp should be used here). THE BASES: pull the dirt from behind and around the bases and fill level the areas in front of the bases. You can use rakes or brooms for this. Sweep the clay from the grass at 3rd base especially. WATER: Water the field to keep the dust down and moisten the clay. This can be done while the other things are being done. Water is available at JC Aux in the snack bar storage room and at JC Main in a valve on the ground near the equipment box (Says Toro on it). The tap is on the top shelf of the box and it is placed in the valve and when turned to the right water comes out. (Connect the hose before turning to the right). REMOVING WATER: This is done correctly by digging a hole in the center of the puddle and using the pump from the box. Pump water into a large bucket and carry to the side lines and dump. Do not sweep water/clay into the grass. This causes lips. TURFACE QUICK DRY: (should be in the box in a bag) Use this to dry up the evacuated puddles by sprinkling some in the mud and mixing with a rake. Do not exceed 2 bags per field. MAKING THE BASE LINES / BATTERS BOX: Each field has a folding batters box template. Lay the template down, walk on it (or use a stick or nail to draw an outline) and pick it up. Use the imprinted lines to lay down the lime. Use the String Winder (from equipment box) to make a straight line from the outside edge of home plate to the outside edge of first and third base. The lines are in fair territory and should go over 1st and 3rd base not to the outside of the base. Run the line machine to the inside of the string.. (Please note that the painted lines in the outfield are not always painted correctly so just do the infield correctly). MARKING LIME: Keep the lime in the bag and do not store it in the bucket as it will collect moisture and will not work very well. SWEEPING AND HOSING LIPS: The most important thing that is always overlooked is sweeping and or hosing the clay from the grass back to the infield. This is what causes the "lips" (There are brooms in each storage box). TARPS: Put tarps on the pitcher's mound and home plate with bricks to hold them down. This is to keep the moisture in and or, the rain off. DUGOUTS: Check both dug outs to make sure all garbage and personal belongings have been removed. Retrieve any clothing, bats, gloves, etc. and give to the appropriate team at the next game. LOCK UP: Load equipment box with rakes and shovels and lime machine and nail drag last. Move latch on equipment box to locked and push the Master lock in to lock the box. Lock all tools in box prior to leaving. Make sure Nelson I Score Board box (3rd base side) is locked. Thank you for helping to keep the fields not only safe but looking and performing great. We need all of you to help. Little League is the largest volunteer organization in the world. Without you, it is not possible. Thanks!
