The birth date of the child is the determining factor as to when the mandatory advancement must take place. Special consideration to a first season player may be given by the Char-Meck board at the request of the MSA board, but is in no way guaranteed. The players current age as of January 1st of the calendar year is the first date taken into account for age group classification. This pertains to the spring season of competition. The players current age as of July 1st of the calendar year is the second date taken into account for age group classification. This pertains to the fall season of competition. An example of this would be that if this child is 10 years of age on January 1st, then this child is eligible to remain in the 10U age group for the spring season. If this child is still 10 years of age on July 1st of the same year, then this child may remain in the 10U age group for the fall season. If this child were to be 10 years of age on January 1st, but turn 11 prior to July 1st of the same calendar year, then this child is eligible to play in the 10U age group during the spring season, but must play in the 12U age group during the fall season. If this child were to turn 11 years of age prior to January 1st, then that child MUST move to the 12U age group for the spring season. MSA was and is still built on the foundation of safety, fun and the end result, being competitive. For this reason, MSA desires to have its players in the proper age appropriate groups in the interest of safety and enjoyment. Below listed ages are defined as appropriate for each age group at Matthews Softball Association: T-ball (Ages 4, 5 & 6) 8U (Ages 7 & 8) 10U (Ages 9 & 10) 12U (Ages 11 & 12) 15U (Ages 13, 14 & 15) Upon registering a child to participate at MSA, the parent and/or guardian who does so, must pay special attention as to the current age of the child. With this in mind, it is important to register the child in the proper age group for the current season, based on age and birth date. MSA recognizes that there will be, at times, players with highly defined skill levels beyond their current age group as defined by birth date. Therefore, a guideline has been implemented for players who can compete above their current age group level, but have not yet grown into what would be defined as old enough for said age group. Early Advancement To An Older Age Group If you feel that your child is ready to move to the next level of competition at an older age group within Matthews Softball Association there are some necessary steps of precaution that must be taken. When registering, there must be an email sent or phone call placed to the MSA President, MSA Vice President, MSA Player Agent or MSA Recreational Coordinator requesting this advancement. If the child is a past player with MSA, the MSA board will speak one on one with the prior seasons MSA coaches of that childs most recent age group to determine if the allowance could be considered in the interest of safety above and beyond skill level. If the child is unknown to MSA, we may ask that the child attend both age group assessments (the current one eligible due to age and the next age group) to assess the players abilities in the interest of safety and skill level. Grandfathering Eligibility Note that if a returning MSA player has previously been allowed to advance to an older age group, in the season prior with MSA, then that player will be grandfathered and does not have to return to the lower age group, if they are still age eligible for the lower age group. Grandfathering does not apply for players new to MSA, as they will be required to follow guidelines #1 & #3 above. It will be at the discretion of the MSA board to allow a player to advance early to the next age group once the interest of safety and skill level have been reviewed properly and discussed. It is not in the best interest of MSA to have a child become injured or be intimidated by those around them if they are not ready to compete in a higher level, faster paced environment.
