Its intent is to help assist you and is certainly not all-inclusive to what may or may not occur as the season progresses. Along with this guide, you have available to you the members of the Bowie Hockey Club Board of Directors, who are always willing to address your concerns and answer any questions you may have. The Bowie Hockey club would like to that you for your willingness to unselfishly lend a hand to the children of the club so that they may have a great experience. The following is a list of the many duties of a team manager and a brief description of each. COMMUNICATION The most important function of a team manager is the ability to communicate with team coaches and parents. You serve as a middle man and will relay information from coaches to your parents and parent concerns to your coaches. Group emails seem to be the best method, of communication regarding upcoming games and practices, attire, directions, and other game-type information. You may choose whichever method best suits you and your team. Keep in mind, particularly in heated situations, that parents tend to be very passionate when matters concern their children. You should always refrain from voicing your own opinion and allow your coaches to deal with parent concerns. And as a reminder, the Bowie Hockey club does have conflict resolution policies in place. If irresolvable conflicts arise, you can seek help from the current BHC Vice President of Travel. GAMES/PRACTICES The BHC Scheduler will be the sole source of scheduling games and practices. He will have each teams schedule available on the BHC website prior to the beginning of the season. The scheduler will schedule both league and non-league games for your teams. If your coach would like to schedule additional games and practices, please be sure to contact the current BHC Scheduler to be sure there are no conflicts. If there is a problem with making a game or practice, you also must contact the club scheduler. The Bowie Hockey club has grown over the years and along with growth comes change. You may find that some of your practices are at rinks other than the Bowie Ice Arena. All teams must face this dilemma and travel is divided between teams fairly; it is the price for continued growth. Each team may choose to travel to as many tournaments as the wish, at their own expense. There are many on-line resources to find tournaments. These should be schedule by teams on their own however, please be sure you let the club scheduler know so that he does not schedule games for your teams during this time. The BHC hosts a home tournament each year and teams are expected to attend. GAME RESPONSIBILITIES It is the responsibility of all home teams to provide personnel for scoring the games, running the clock and home team penalty box management. As a team manager, you will need to schedule your parents to perform these tasks. You as a manager, if possible, should not assume these roles, as you are the source of documents that may need to be presented at games. For away games, the responsibility is to provide penalty box management for your team only. Training of clock management and scoring is available by request to all teams. It is easy to schedule this during a practice as most parents are on hand. If you would like to schedule training, you may contact any member of the Board of Directors and they will assist you with this. Keep in mind, parents assuming these roles are considered off-ice officials and MUST refrain from comments to other teams, coaches, players, and officials. Focus must be on accurate management of the game at hand. Score sheets contain a large amount of information. Once signed, the score sheet is official and cannot be changed without considerable effort. Statistics are kept by many teams and deemed important by coaches for improvement of play throughout the season. It is important to be as accurate as possible. If there is dispute over the score sheet you may discuss the error with the game official, as it should be resolved prior to teams leaving the venue. Official score sheets will be given to each team manager at the beginning of the season. For non-league games, BHC score sheets should be used and are available in the managers locker at the rink. It is your responsibility, as a team manager, to mail in league copies of score sheets within 72 hours of the finish of a league game. The mailing address is printed on the score sheet. If you fail to do this, the club will be fined for each occurrence. Non-league game score sheets do not need to be mailed. After each game, home and visiting coaches, and officials must sign score sheets. A copy of the score sheet should be offered to all parties. How you schedule your parents for management of games is up to you and your parents. WEBSITE MANAGEMENT As a team manager, you have the ability to access your teams web page and enter a multitude of information. You will be given a password that is specific to you team and can enter game results, bulletins, messages, statistics, rosters, and any other team oriented information. The website has a tutorial to help you through the process however, if you have further questions, you can contact the BHC Technical Support. DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT The team manager is given a managers book at the beginning of the season. The book should be carried with you to each game and practice. The book should have, at the very least, the following documents in it: Official Roster This is the teams official registration by USA Hockey Make copies as some sites may ask for one particularly at tournaments Changes to the roster may be made until Dec 31st. Birth Certificates A copy for each player should be on hand in case there are questions about player validity. Medical Forms In case of injury or illness, should accompany player to medical site USA Hockey and Bowie city waivers Each player must be registered with USA Hockey for the current season A copy of the registration form should be on hand Players must also sign a Bowie City Waiver regarding the use of the Bowie Ice Arena a copy should also be on hand Contact information Players Coaches Board of Directors Player Award forms Should have many copies on hand Score sheets CBHL official score sheets for league games BHC score sheets for non-league games Other resource material may be place in the book at your discretion. PLAYER AWARDS Each player has the ability to earn awards throughout the season. The three awards given by USA Hockey are playmaker (three assists in one game), Hat trick (three goals in one game) and Shut-out (no goals allowed in one game by a goalie). One player may earn only one of each award in a given season. Award forms should be filled out by the team manager and submitted to the current BHC Secretary as they are earned. If you wait until seasons end to submit award forms, you run the risk of them not being available for distribution at season-end team functions. Other awards that can be earned by teams throughout the season are medals, trophies, and banners won at tournaments and banners won at the league play-offs at the end of the season. Some teams hand out trophies at the end of the season to their players. While the BHC is supportive of this effort, it will be at each teams own expense. ATTIRE It is expected that each team will wear the BHC approved uniform at all games. Any deviation from the current approved uniform must be submitted and approved by the BHC Board of Directors. Many coaches have pre-game attire requirements such as shirt and tie, or BHC warm-up. Coaches will express the wishes for their team prior to the beginning of the season. If you need, or would like to purchase a BHC warm-up, or are in need of a BHC Jersey, please contact the current BHC Equipment manager. FUNDRAISING There is a Director of Sponsorships and Fundraising for the BHC who shall attempt to bring in funds for the club as a whole. Each team however, may participate in their our fund raising drives and/or acquire their own team sponsors. The BHC Board of Directors must approve all fundraising. Funds from fund raising efforts must be used in the season that it is earned and should never be held over for a following hockey year. No team may open a bank account in the name of Bowie Hockey. All team managers should keep an accounting of fund distribution for view at any time by their parents. Typical uses for funds are, but not limited to, tournament fees, end of season parties, and trophies. Your teams may use their funds as they choose. CBHL The Capital Beltway Hockey league is the governing body of league play for your team. There are many other leagues around the area such as PAHL (Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League), DVHL (Delaware Valley Hockey League), NJYHL (New Jersey Youth Hockey League), and the CHL (Carolinas Hockey League). You can access all league information at CBHL.org. Other league sites can be access at their own sites and serve as resources about other teams and tournaments out site of the CBHL. As you can see, the team manager is the working force behind every team. Parents will use you as a resource for all of their questions and concerns and coaches will use you as a go-between to your parents. Most coaches do not want to deal with the administration of the teams, they just want to coach. It seems like quite a job however, it is up to you to use all of your parents to help throughout the season. Generally, it is a fun job and done well, makes for an exciting and fun season for your team as a whole. Again, you are not alone use your Board of Directors any time you need advice or have concerns as they are there for you. Good luck to each of you and have a great season. nq ! ^s0:I(*_"`"g"_$k$['`'a',>*H*5\CJ jUCJH 5>*\%rs$a$$a$,12 !
