The parent coach and/or assistant can choose to be the POD at each practice if he or she is going to attend each week. In that case, no other parents on the team would be assigned during the season, and that is fine. In the case where the coach and/or assistant coach will not be able to attend all practices, there will be a need for a POD to cover some of the time. It is up to the coach to assign the parents at the beginning of the season for those days he or she will not be around. Each parent on a team would only be assigned the task once or twice each season, so it should not be a burden. Parents would be allowed to switch days or have another parent cover their turn for them. Bottom line, there should be two adults responsible for the children at all times. A “coach” and a “POD”. At the beginning of the practice, the POD should help gather the team together for the trainer, take attendance, identify themselves to the trainer as the POD for the week, stay close to the sidelines in case the trainer or players need something, make sure no one wanders off from the group, and tie an occasional shoelace. Most of the time, very easy, simple job! Occasionally, there is a medical emergency. In this situation, the POD would be responsible for supervising the other children while the trainer takes care of the injured player. This is rare, but does happen from time to time. The POD should have the medical information with them, ie who is allergic to bees, etc, and be familiar with it before going to practice, and share this information with the trainer on an as needed basis. Lastly, the POD would be responsible for making sure all children are picked up after practice. Coaches should provide a contact list for their team to all parents at the beginning of the season. The POD should have this list with them for their assigned practice day in case they need to make any calls regarding pick up. In summary, this is a very simple job, but very important one all the same. Thank you all for the cooperation. This program would not run without the support of our parents. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact your league director or VP Rec Soccer.
