Nominees for the UVRF Board of Directors:

Buzz Congram

congram photo I have enjoyed serving on the UVRF Board of Directors and would like to extend my service for another term. Over the last three years it has been gratifying to see UVRF and its Board reorganize itself into an all volunteer organization that now functions in an efficient and well organized manner and is more effectively meeting the rowing needs of its members. I would like to continue contributing to this effort, particularly in the area of improved quality and condition of our sweep and sculling equipment and launches and motors.

I have been involved in rowing since my senior year at Columbia University and have been a professional rowing coach for the last 48 years. During that time I have coached male and female athletes at the high school, club, collegiate, and national team levels. I have retired from full time collegiate coaching, but still offer private sculling and sweep sessions here on the Connecticut River and as a Visiting Coach at Marin Rowing Association in Marin, CA.

Jen Friend

friend photo As an adult onset rower who learned to row with Upper Valley Rowing, I have enjoyed the opportunity to give back to the rowing community by serving on the UVRF board. Over the past three years we have added new programs, new equipment and reorganized as an all volunteer board to better serve our members. I would like the opportunity to serve a second term on the board and help us build on these successes. My rowing career began in 1999 after I moved to the Upper Valley. I rowed with the women’s competitive program for several years and now focus primarily on sculling. Last summer I gave a few sculling lessons and look forward to doing more of that in the future. When I am not on the water, I work at Dartmouth Medical School as the director of research support. I live in Orford, NH with my Golden Retriever puppy, who attended his first UVRF board meeting in January.

Dick Grossman

grossman photo 2010 marks my 50th year in rowing. I have been a competitor, coach, administrator, HHS crew parent, and owner of a rowing-related services company. As a competitor, I have raced at the high school, college, club, and international levels, and still compete in masters' races. I have been involved with club, team, and regatta administration, and have been manager of several U. S. teams and Olympic Trials. I coached the Dartmouth crews for 30 years, retiring in 2005. I started running the Dartmouth Summer Rowing Program in its infancy (1976), and remained involved as it developed into the current complex of UVRF programs.

I have been on the UVRF Board for the past three years, and coached the UVRF Masters men this fall. The UVRF has made significant strides in improving opportunities for rowing in the Upper Valley, and I would like to continue to be a part of that progress.

Dan Ruml

ruml photo I started crew in 1963; first rowed from Fuller 43 years ago and switched to sculling there in 1975. My morning rows were replaced with cycling when I moved to the Arizona desert in 1992. After a business career managing troubled companies I switched to designing and building houses. I have subdivided my family’s property in Strafford, Vermont and am building our house. As I entered the 4th year of being nearly finished I recognized the opportunity to resume rowing and have broadened my carpentry and woodworking interests to include shell renovation and boat storage solutions. I have enjoyed my participation on the UVRF Sculling Committee and the Janitorial, Sweep to Scull, and After Hours squads. Crew has given me good health and good friends. I will continue working to keep club rowing accessible in Hanover and would like to reach even more in the Upper Valley.

Win Piper

stick figureI first tried rowing in college, a long time ago. Later, as a graduate student, I rowed with Yankee Rowing Club in Northampton, MA and served two terms there as president. Since ours was a small club, my primary responsibility was to answer inquiries from prospective members and spend time on the water introducing newcomers to sculling. We also maintained a number of club singles for members’ use. We shared boathouse space with U Mass. and had a ringside seat to watch the explosive growth of women’s rowing there, guided by head coach Jim Dietz. Yankee was also involved in a collaboration with the Massachusetts Dept. of Natural Resources to develop and operate an adaptive rowing program, which I participated in as a rowing partner.

Since moving to the Upper Valley in 1997 I have been an active sculler in the Fuller Boathouse group based at the Dartmouth facility, racing occasionally. Though our sons are not yet students there, I have been an admiring fan of the Hanover High Crew and this year am volunteering as an assistant coach.

Rowing has been my single greatest interest after family and work for the past 20 years and I have had the opportunity see it from many vantage points. I would be honored to continue to serve the Upper Valley rowing community as a member of the UVRF board, and will work diligently to see rowing opportunities made available to all in the Upper Valley.
